Business Parent of the Year
My husband and I run a fitness club together. Last August, our beautiful baby boy Callum was born. Maternity leave - what's that? - wasn't really an option. I did reduce my hours but, before long, was back in the swing of full-time work again. In fairness, Callum is a very good baby - he has to be with our busy schedule. He is now nine-months-old and, because we don't have a childminder, we look after him ourselves while at the same time working 40+ hours a week each.
On an average day, one of us is up at 6.30am to go to work at the club while the other stays at home, looks after Callum, prepares meals, looks after the house and then we swap places at 3pm until 10pm (finishing at 8pm some days). We also work weekends - my husband works Saturday, I do Sunday. It's not easy but with the recession we can't afford to take anyone on to work.
The great thing about our situation is that we get to raise our son ourselves - we saw him roll over for the first time, sit up by himself, say his first words: mama and dada. Being able to be there for all that is a real blessing and we wouldn't change him or that for the world.
