Little Champion of the Year

My son Calbhach Harte O'Reilly, age seven, rescued me when I fell unconscious on the Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth earlier this year. We were taking a walk and having a picnic on the mountains because my son was learning about the Brown Bull of Cooley at school. We were in an isolated area known as the Long Woman's Grave when, on our way down the mountain, I slipped and hit my head on a rock. I lay there until darkness fell but my son kept talking to me and used my phone to ring my mum Mary in Drogheda. He was able to explain where we were and what had happened.

While talking to my mum, the phone signal went but when it came back, he dialled 999, asked for the Gardai and an ambulance. In the meantime, I began to wake up and my son helped me back to the car. He locked the doors, gave me water and turned the radio on to keep me awake. The Gardai and ambulance made their way to the remote area on the side of the mountain and took me to Louth County Hospital where I was treated for a head injury.
I've no idea what would have happened to us both if we had remained in the area without being found.
