Caring, supportive, compassionate and encouraging are just some of the words used to describe midwives. We want to recognise a midwife that has gone beyond the call of duty to care for new parents and infants. Does your midwife deserve recognition? Tell us their story!
Our 2011 Midwife of the Year is Cecelia Mulcahy. Here is her story:
More often than not, a midwife is more than just a medical professional who has a duty of care towards mother and baby; they have a catch-all role of being a confidant, councillor, educator and, sometimes, a friend. This role becomes even more important when a woman is expecting twins, and nobody can attest to the importance of the midwife more than mum-of-four Marianne Cassidy.
Having had two sets of twins under the care of Cecelia Mulcahy of the Foetal Assessment/Twin Clinic, Holles Street, Marianne cannot praise Cecelia’s skills as a midwife enough. Both of Marianne’s twin pregnancies had varying complications, which Cecelia immediately addressed whilst guiding Marianne through all of the resulting treatments and procedures. During her second pregnancy, Marianne took comfort and reassurance from having Cecelia once again involved in her care. According to Marianne, she found Cecelia to be “extremely calm and supportive” throughout her second pregnancy, from when she found out she was having another set of twins, through to Cecelia’s efficiency and reassurances during the birth, when Marianne suffered a massive haemorrhage.

Marianne believes that Cecelia has wonderful qualities which can be hard to find in a midwife. “She listens, thoroughly follows up on any complaints or little ailments you may have, and she always keeps you informed.” Marianne concludes that one of the most refreshing aspects of Cecelia’s care is that “she has a great sense of humour, even during the tough times.” |
