Our 2011 Mum of the Year is Zoe Woodward! Here is her story:

Mum of the Year is Zoe Woodward, who not only cares for her three children whist managing a demanding full-time job, but has helped to raise over €290,000 for cystic fibrosis units. Zoe, who was nominated by her friend Jaime O’Shea, is married with two little girls, Emily (six) and Lana (four), and a baby boy, Daniel (18 months). Both of her girls were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) shortly after birth, which Jaime stresses is “a life-shortening and difficult illness that causes ever-increasing lung damage, severe respiratory problems and harm to other vital organs.” Finding out that two of her children have CF was heartbreaking, according to Jaime, but Zoe’s remarkably positive attitude to dealing with the illness illustrates her dedicated and proactive approach to ensuring her children live happy, healthy lives.

Zoe works hard on a constant basis to ensure she is aware of the most up-to-date available research on CF. A typical day for her not only includes everything a regular mum does, but also carefully planning the girls’ diets, physiotherapy appointments, exercise routines and daily treatments.

Last year Zoe and a few of her family members decided to devote time and effort into helping other families and children coping with CF. They went on to establish the ‘1 in 1,000’ campaign, which aimed to raise €200,000 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital to build an isolation unit for CF patients. After a huge amount of work and organisation, Zoe succeeded in getting over 1,000 women to run the 2010 Flora Women’s Mini Marathon – the single largest group taking part – raising €290,000. In the midst of all this, Zoe gave birth to her son Daniel a mere three months before the race, and still managed to complete it in under 55 minutes!
