Our 2011 Paediatrician of the Year is Dr. Michael Mahony. Here is his story:

For most parents, finding a doctor who they have complete confidence in is no easy feat, but finding one who also displays empathy, understanding and patience to ease their worries and fears is an absolute lifeline. It certainly was for Clodagh O’Carroll, who found all these qualities and more in Dr. Michael Mahony, whom she describes as being “a God send.”

Dr. Mahony has been Clodagh’s son Christian’s paediatrician since last December. Christian (2) was very ill from infancy but, despite seeking answers from various specialists, no diagnosis or treatment plan was determined for Christian for a long time. Clodagh was therefore relieved when Christian was eventually diagnosed with eosinophillic eophagitis, an allergic inflammatory condition of the esophagus. It was during Christian’s eventual diagnosis that Clodagh met Dr. Mahony, who was very sympathetic of Christian’s complex medical history, as well as proactive in his treatment.

Clodagh describes her experience with Dr. Mahony by saying: “When I’m in his company all my fears and worries leave me. He is the most compassionate, caring, reassuring consultant I have ever met. Above that, he listens to me, lets me have an input in Christian’s treatment but, even better, he doesn’t just acknowledge Christian, but plays with him and interacts with him.” Dr. Mahony has recognised the rarity of Christian’s condition, and is currently trying to organise a US specialist to give a lecture on eosinophillic eophagitis in Ireland, to raise awareness and devise better treatment plans for suffers of this condition.
